Safe passage through a storm
Anna Ruiz's Swimming Girl takes inspiration from the Greek goddess Amphitrite (Roman Salacia), goddess of the sea and wife of Poseidon. She and her sisters had the power to calm rough waters.
This subtly shimmering gold edition is an original hand-carved linocut printed on pale cream Somerset Velvet paper in Anna's Bristol studio.
The paper has a natural uneven deckle edge.
A variant of woodcut, linocut is a relief print technique dating back to the beginning of the 1900s. Linoleum is a natural material made out of linseed oil and other residual materials like pine resin and wood dust. The design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, chisel or gouge and then inked and pressed onto fabric or paper.
