Memphis was a 1980s design movement created by an Italian group of designers and architects, and founded by Ettore Sottsass. The design group created furniture, glassware, and textiles using abstract shapes, bold patterns, and contrasting colours. At the time, it was radical, outrageous, and strikingly different from the minimalist mid-century modern approach of the 1970s.
The dynamic Memphis style has art deco and pop art influences and is characterised by colourful palettes, asymmetrical shapes, bold graphics, and geometric patterns.
